Meet Our Leaders
Dr. Alan G. Shriro, DVM, President
Alan has been on the BEBHS Board of Directors since 1997, and has served as president for most of his tenure. He believes in serving our community’s animals and helping to save animal lives. Alan has co-owned Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital for 32 years. He served as President of the Alameda County Veterinary Medical Association for two terms and currently serves as the Peer Review and Ethics chairman for Alameda County. When not working at the Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital or performing his duties as BEBHS President, Alan loves to scuba dive and travel the world. He is an award winning photographer and is the proud guardian of 2 dogs and 3 cats.
Barbara Sutherland, PhD, Vice-President
Barbara has served on the BEBHS Board of Directors since 2002. She has a deep passion for animals and is dedicated to educating the public on the importance of compassion and respect for them. She is the Director of the Statewide Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) at UC Davis where Barbara provides statewide program leadership and coordination in the determination of nutritional needs among various ethnic and cultural groups in California. Barbara lives with numerous pets, and can often be found helping in pet rescue efforts in her neighborhood.
Linda Zitzner, Treasurer
Linda has served on the BEBHS Board since 2004 and has been Treasurer since 2006. She works as the Director of Business Operations at Applied Materials in Fremont, California, where she directs an analytical testing and precision service. Linda joined the BEBHS board because she wants to be involved with an organization that helps the community, and because she believes strongly in the humane treatment of animals. Linda lives with two poodles (standard and mini) and one crazy parrot.
Lynn Malley, Secretary
Lynn has served on the BEBHS Board since 2004 and has been Secretary since 2006. She was a 25-year employee of Catholic Healthcare West where she managed human resources for the corporate office. Recently, Lynn began her own HR consulting practice and also opened a pet-sitting business – City Pets. Lynn is affiliated with several professional associations, including the Society for Human Resources Management, the No. California Human Resources Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. Lynn serves on the BEBHS Board because of her passion for animals and animal welfare, and her desire to help animals in need. Lynn lives with 3 cats and 2 dogs – all rescues.
Eric Bohr, PhD, Director
Eric has served on the BEBHS Board of Directors since 2006. He is a Change Manager at Cisco Systems and has worked in the management field for many years helping large companies adapt to organizational change. He also is active in the Bay Area Organization Development Network. Eric joined the BEBHS Board because he believes pets are part of each person’s family and wants us to realize our vision of every adoptable animal being in a life-long home. He supports his beliefs in his own family with his four cats and one dog – all rescues.
Connie Chiulli, Director
Connie has served on the BEBHS Board of Directors since 2007. She is the Director of Operations for Occupational Health Services at Kaiser Permanente where she oversees operations and finance for 32 clinics in Northern California. Connie is a member of the Society for Professionals in Healthcare and also serves on the LiteracyWorks Board of Directors. Prior to joining our Board, Connie became familiar with our services through her father who needed our help with his cats. She is committed to the humane treatment of all animals, and is proud of BEBHS’ comprehensive education and outreach to create a more humane community.
Virginia Gray, Director
Virginia has been a member of the BEBHS Board of Directors since April 2008. She is the Director of Strategic and Direct Marketing at UC Berkeley where she manages the mass fundraising strategies of direct mail, email, and telefundraising. Virginia also has many years of experience doing corporate branding work with Proctor & Gamble, Shaklee, Nestle, and other companies. She is a member of the Annual Giving Directors Consortium which is comprised of direct marketers for the country’s major US public and private universities.
Shelly Irvine, Director
Shelly has been a member of the BEBHS Board of Directors since January 2008 and is looking forward to many years of contributing and working with other passionate and generous people. She is a Senior managing Director for FTI Consulting in San Francisco where she works with clients and counsel needing assistance in intellectual property matters. Her experience spans many industries including life sciences, semiconductor, communications, computer software and hardware, retail and manufacturing. She has a professional background in accounting, finance and economics and is a Cal Berkeley grad. She has a 6 year old yellow lab with epilepsy, and her passion is helping animals find loving and permanent homes, particularly older animals and those with special needs.
Stacie Nelson, Director
Stacie has served on the BEBHS Board of Directors since 2007 and her passion is to serve the community by protecting and assisting animals and families. She is an attorney with Reed Smith LLP in Oakland where she handles trust and estate litigation to assist charities and beneficiaries secure their bequests. Stacie is a member of the American Bar Association, the East Bay Planning Council, and serves as co-chair of the Trusts and Estates Division of the Alameda County Bar Association. She is also a member of the Bay Area Bruins and the Junior League of the East Bay. Stacie has two cats and one dog at home.
Mim Carlson, Executive Director
Mim has served as the executive director of the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society since 2004. She has worked in the nonprofit and animal welfare sector for 30 years in management or consultant positions. Mim has also written three books; Winning Grants Step by Step, Team Based Fundraising, and the Executive Director’s Survival Guide. At BEBHS, Mim is responsible for guiding the organization’s priorities with programs, administration, and fundraising. Her life has always been filled with animals, usually showing up on her doorstep needing a new home. She currently lives with 3 cats adopted from BEBHS.
