July Humane Highlights

Gentle Mike was found wandering the streets and a Good Samaritan took him into their home before bringing him to us. Although Mike was a social butterfly in doggie playgroup, life on the streets had left him a bit wary of people, but he warmed up quickly. One afternoon Tom and Charlotte stopped by the shelter and after describing their “perfect” dog, Mike immediately popped into our Canine Coordinator’s mind. Tom and Charlotte felt their hearts melt when they met Mike and adopted him the following week. Mike is blossoming in his new home and Tom feels as though he has “known Mike forever.”

Adopt a Dog!

Snoopy and Miu Miu's guardian became so ill that she had to surrender her two 8-year old felines to us.  As with many older felines, Snoopy and Miu Miu had a very difficult time in the shelter and were extremely shy when potential adopters came to see them.  We were worried that finding them a new home would take a very long time.  Fortunately, that wasn't the case and both cats have found perfect new homes for themselves.  Snoopy and Miu Miu are part of our Golden Paws Program that encourages adoptions of senior pets.

Adopt a Cat!

BEBHS' Humane Education programs have reached over 3,000 students since December 2006. However, there are still several under-funded schools that cannot afford to pay the small lesson fee we charge to cover the cost of materials and transportation. To allow access to our programs to these underserved students, we have started A Kinder World Scholarship Fund. A donation of $100 covers the costs of 6 classroom lessons so that 180 students, who may otherwise never be exposed to humane education, can experience BEBHS' interactive programs in their schools. Learn more about our classroom programs.

Fresh Look for Hospital

We are excited to announce that our newly “updated” hospital is now open for business again! As you may have heard, the BEBHS’ veterinary hospital was closed for a short while to make some physical improvements. During this time we installed brand new, beautiful floors, painted, and added some much needed new furniture. We are very pleased with the new “look” and want to thank all of the donors and volunteers that contributed to this project!

A Birthday Benefit

Lucy, one of our canine volunteers, asked her friends and family to donate money to BEBHS in lieu of gifts for her 12th birthday! Lucy’s kind gesture resulted in almost $200 donated to the shelter to help our special needs animals. Lucy is also the proud adopter of Molly, who was treated for ringworm in our hospital. Lucy and her mom, fell in love with Molly and now the sweet canine is basking in the care and love of her new family!

Service Skills and Tricks is a new twist on the basic dog tricks class. Make your dog a helpmate by teaching useful skills such as picking up things for you, opening and closing doors, and operating switches, along with some other fun and entertaining tricks-includes, jumping through a small hoop!

Please note the following correction from June’s Humane Highlights: In the article about the Friends Indeed Program we incorrectly stated that the SF/SPCA donated the time of a surgeon to help a BEBHS client. The article should have stated “The SF/SPCA donated the materials for the surgery. Dr. Jack Aldridge donated his time to perform the surgery.”
