It is our hope that our lessons will:

LESSON PLANS

Teachers may choose from the following lesson plans. (Please note: Select lesson plans are only available to certain age-groups/grades.)

Animals Can Talk: (K-5) Children learn that while animals do not use words, they do indeed communicate effectively with us vocally and through body language. By learning to understand the ways that cats and dogs "talk" to us, children also learn respect for the feelings of animals, and how to interact safely with them.

Caring for a Pet: (K-5) Caring for a pet can be a fun and rewarding experience but it is also a huge responsibility, one that children often do not recognize. This lesson challenges children to consider the needs of pets, encourages them to acknowledge their roles in meeting these needs, and helps them learn the principles of being a responsible citizen.

Canine-ality!: (K-2 only) New for '08-'09 school year! Coming soon...

Good Sense: (K-2 only) Children discover the ways in which dogs and cats see, hear, smell, taste and feel the world they share with us. Through interactive exploration, students learn important lessons about considering the needs of their animal friends and appreciating their amazing abilities. *

Wild and Mild: (3-5 only) New for '08-'09 school year! Children learn the differences between wild animal populations and overpopulated companion animals, how animals were domesticated and our responsibility to those animals. They discuss why these dilemmas exist, and what they can do to reduce the overpopulation of companion animals in their community.

Your Humane Society: (K-5) New for '08-'09 school year! By learning about the mission of the Berkeley Humane Society, children gain an understanding of the dilemmas facing animals and the ideals promoted by our programs. Children discuss making humane choices, problem solving, and how to exercise compassion in their daily lives, as well as why the Humane Society is a resource for the community.

Suggestions for Teachers

The following are tips for ensuring a successful visit from the BEBHS Humane Ed program:

1. Register for a program at least two weeks in advance.
2. Ask your students to prepare a list of specific questions on relevant topics. Younger students may need clarification on the difference between questions and stories.
3. Please let the Humane Education Department know in advance if you would like to empasize certain ideas or subjects.
4. Please also let us know in advance if dogs or cats are not allowed in your classroom due to allergies or school policy.
5. Let your front office know that your class is expecting a four-legged visitor!
6. Talk to your students about proper behavior around animals: keeping noise levels low, refraining from running, and staying in their seats.
7. Encourage your students to get involved by collecting coins, supplies or other donations for the animals at the Humane Society. This is a great way to extend the impact!

We are eager and excited to offer this invaluable service to the community. Please check back with us soon for more updates, program details, new lessons, and other services we will offer to classrooms and the community.
