Dogs & Tales
The Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society partners with local public libraries and businesses where we present Humane Education themed books in story times along with an appropriate dog. Children have a chance to hear stories about animals and to learn about meeting dogs safely. If they are comfortable doing so, they can also practice what they've learned and meet the dog.
If you are interested in coordinating an event with your group at a local library or rec center, please contact the Humane Education Department by email education@berkeleyhumane.org or by phone at (510) 845-7735, ext. 23.

Featured Book (Winter 2008):
"
Francine Francine the Beach Party Queen!" by Audrey Colman
Francine is a sweet and goofy dog whose rather boring and insensitive family doesn't appreciate her. High-spirited and curious, she gets into all sorts of trouble. Does Francine have a nose for mischief, or is she just looking for love and acceptance? "I want to be able to act like a dog," she says. "If I have to I'll travel to France or to Prague!" This upbeat, compassionate story in rhymed verse teaches kindness toward animals, and the trademark computerized collages by Audrey Colman -- illustrator of
Walter the Farting Dog, a
New York Times bestseller and Children's Book Sense 76 selection -- enhance the lesson.
Donate A Book
Our goal is to make a copy of each book on our bibliography available for interested readers here at the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society. A few authors and publishers have generously made copies available. We are also seeking donations of books to help us expand our new humane education library collection. For a list of books, please see our Amazon wish list. Many of these books may also be available at your local bookstore.
We are eager and excited to offer this invaluable service to the community. Please check back with us soon for more updates, program details, more Dogs & Tales dates, and other services we will offer to libraries and the community.
