Featured Emergency Medical Fund Pet: Nefertiti and Pals
Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society rescued five cats from a woman who was hoarding more than 70 cats in her home, which meant the cats lived in very crowded and unsanitary conditions and this led to diseases in most of the animals.
The five cats taken to BEBHS are no exception and all of them desperately needed medical attention upon arrival. All of the cats were emaciated, missing a significant number of teeth, and had Upper Respiratory Infections. Our dedicated hospital staff spend a lot of time bathing the animals who were matted with feces. The cats then underwent a regimen of antibiotics and received (or will receive) dental work to relieve some of the suffering from inflamed gums and diseased teeth. Three of the cats needed to be spayed or neutered and all required a full set of vaccinations.
Two of the cats recovered quickly and have already been adopted to new, loving homes. Three cats remain in veterinary care at BEBHS. One still has significant hair loss and has been placed in ringworm quarantine, which will last for at least 6 weeks. The sickest cat, Nefertiti, is still overcoming respiratory illness and suffers from stomatitis, a painful mouth condition that's difficult and lengthy to treat. If her stomatitis gets worse, it may require that all of her teeth be removed.
Despite the poor conditions at the hoarder's house, the cats display few behavioral issues and they are playful and outgoing. We are looking for pet lovers who would like to provide a better life for the three cats who remain in our care. In addition to adoption, BEHBS is seeking donations to help with the cost of medical care provided to these five desperate cats, which will total over $10,000.
Generous donations to the Emergency Medical Fund will pay for the medical needs of these five cats and we hope you will continue to support the many other wonderful animals who, like them, need emergency care and a second chance for a wonderful life.
