Training:

These positions do not require volunteers to attend the General Orientation Session. Please apply by following the instructions to the right.

The Development and Administrative teams oversee our marketing, fundraising, finance/accounting, and event planning operations and are responsible for ensuring the long-term success of the organization. Most positions permit flexible scheduling, working from home, resume-building, and a quick start-up schedule. 

Opportunities:

Database Intern/Volunteer: By helping us keep up with our data management, Database Inters and Volunteers enable Berkeley Humane to operate as efficiently as possible. More information here.

Marketing/Promotions Volunteers: This is a great opportunity for animal lovers who are interested in social media, marketing, graphic design, blog writing, photography and/or videography. More information here.

Shelter Support

Shifts:

1-hour shifts are available 7 days a week

Our Shelter Support volunteers assist with daily shelter tasks such as cleaning, organizing, and maintenance. This is the first phase of training for all incoming volunteers who are interested in working with the animals. Once you are trained, our expectation is that you will incorporate shelter tasks into your routine so that we are all contributing to maintaining optimal shelter standards.

Materials:

Apron (available for purchase for $10 for a half apron or $12 for a full apron) and name tag, which must be worn at all times during your shift.

Feline Friends

Shifts:

1-2 hour shifts available 7 days a week

Commitment:

1 shift weekly for 6 months

Our Feline Friends help with cat care and socialization Wednesday through Sunday, and also assist during adoption hours by welcoming adopters to the cat housing areas, supervising and facilitating customer-cat interactions, and showing the binder of available cats and dogs to potential adopters!

Training:

Volunteer Information Session, Shelter Support Training, and a 1-hour Feline Friends Training.

Canine Friends

Shifts:

7-9am, 10-12pm, 12-2pm, 2-4pm, 4-6pm

Commitment:

1 shift weekly for 6 months

Provide our shelter dogs with potty breaks, walks for exercise and socialization, and kennel enrichment so that they remain happy and healthy while in our care and become more adoptable! Responsibilities vary by sift and all Canine Friends are expected to help with cleaning.

Training:

Volunteer Information Session, Shelter Support Training, and a 2-hour Canine Friends Training

Requirements:

Ability to handle dogs of varying sizes, temperaments and training levels. Ability to comfortably lift up to 40 lbs. You must be physically agile and be able to respond quickly. Some familiarity with canine body language is prefered.

PAWS/Pet Food Pantry

Shifts:

vary depending upon program needs

Volunteers are the heart and soul of PAWS/East Bay, and volunteer opportunities are plentiful and diverse. On-going, weekly volunteer opportunities, monthly visits to deliver food and supplies, or temporary fostering of an animal are all possible. Our elder, disabled, or terminally ill clients frequently need assistance with dog walking, cat care, grooming, transportation to veterinary appointments, and poop-scooping/litter box cleaning.

 

 

Veterinary Spay/Neuter Clinic Assistant

Shifts:

Wednesdays from 10am-3pm (prior veterinary assistance experience)

Wednesdays from 3pm to 6:30pm (entry-level)

Commitment:

1 shift weekly for 6 months

Veterinary Spay/Neuter Clinic Assistants help the veterinary staff with daily clinic duties. This position is fast-paced and requires a volunteer with some background in the animal medical field who learns quickly.

This position has varying levels of animal contact, and can be informative for those considering a career in the field of veterinary medicine.

Duties:

Cleaning and wrapping surgical instruments; cleaning the prep and surgery rooms in the clinic; cleaning cages and animal habitats; patient recovery; laundry; sweeping and mopping; safe handling of animals.

For our animal care positions, we welcome youth volunteers aged 10-17 to volunteer with involvement from a parent/guardian. Youth 10-15 years of age must volunteer with a parent/guardian on a 1:1 ratio at all times. Young adults over 16 may volunteer independently once they have gone through the training program with their guardian and have been approved by staff.
