Disaster Planning for You and Your Pets
Your pets depend on you for their safety and well-being so please include them in your family plan for disasters and emergencies. We've compiled the following information to help you and we also sell a 3-Day Pet Survival Kit.
You can download this information in the Pet Disaster Plan brochure ( PDF).
Advance Planning
Be prepared for your pet’s stress - Your pet(s) will be dealing with their own anxiety and confusion. It’s normal for friendly animals to become defensive.
Locate a safe place BEFORE disaster strikes— Designate a friend or family member to serve as both a distant meeting point and temporary living space for you, your family, and your animals.
Clearly identify your pet(s)—make sure all animals have current identification, licenses, vaccinations, and are micro-chipped.
Prepare for not being home when disaster strikes—Make arrangements with a neighbor to evacuate your pets/animals in case you cannot make it home. They should know the location of your emergency supplies, have a key to your home, and know how to contact you.
Place an emergency sticker or sign on your front window— that indicates the # and kind of animals in your house. This helps the fire department or police rescue them. (These stickers can be purchased at BEBHS).
After the Disaster
Check your pet for injuries
Keep your pet confined in your home or in a crate
If you know that a disaster is imminent (e.g.: Aftershock of an earthquake) control pets using a leash, crate, or carrier for their safety
If You Must Leave Your Pet
Place them in a safe, secure room (a bathroom is ideal)
Do not tie an animal to something
Leave enough food and water for an extended period of time—3 to 7 days
Make sure that they have current identification
Don’t confine dogs and cats together
Place a notice on your door or elsewhere in and outside of your home with the contact information for you, an alternative person, and your veterinarian
