General Information Session
If you have time to give, want to help East Bay cats and dogs looking for homes, and are interested in our volunteer program (see Volunteer Opportunities for detailed information), please register for a General Information Session.
**We are in the process of making some changes to our volunteer program, and there are no General Information Sessions scheduled at this time. We will schedule them soon, so please check back.**
Animal care positions are currently near capacity. We are focusing our volunteer recruitment efforts on administrative assistance, foster care for dogs and cats, fundraising, photography and videography.
For the animal care positions, the minimum time commitment is one regular 2-hr weekly shift for six months. Shifts are scheduled during our hours of operation from 7:00am to 6:00pm. If you plan to volunteer for any of the non-animal care positions, you need only to attend the General Information Session prior to receiving your assignment. Minimum commitments for non-animal care opportunities varies and can often be flexible. Animal care volunteers follow the following training schedule:
Week 1: General Information Session (one hour)
Week 2: Shelter Support training: Safety & Disease Prevention (two hours)
Week 3: Shelter Support: Reception (one hour)
Week 4: Shelter Support Shift (one hour self-scheduled shift)
Week 5: Shelter Support Shift (one hour self-scheduled shift)
Week 6: Canine Friend training (two hours)
Feline Friend Training (one hour)
The training series starts on the second Sunday of the month and continues every weekend after that until complete.
The minimum age requirement for volunteering with the dogs at Berkeley Humane is 16. If you plan to work only with cats, the minimum age requirement is 10. Minors aged 10-15 work under the supervision of a parent or guardian as a team. If you are seeking opportunities to fulfill a school community service requirement, we will assist you with coordinating a fund or donation drive at your school or in your community.
Berkeley Humane is committed to providing each volunteer and foster parent with a rewarding and productive experience. We look forward to meeting you!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Berkeley Humane! We are in the process of re-vamping our program so that we can provide the best experience possible to our volunteers. This means that we are putting new orientations on hold for the immediate future. Please visit our opportunities page for a list of active volunteer needs. We hope to be up and running again by late June, when we will update our website with orientation details. Thank you for your patience. We hope to get the opportunity to work with you soon.
