Puppy Kindergarten

A "head start" for puppies - includes socialization and early training issues. This class provides shaping of basic manners, learning how to learn and vital early (pre-four month) socialization with dogs and people.

We offer the AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY program for all puppies in our classes. Participation is not required to attend classes. For more information on S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, read the AKC brochure .

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour classes; class limited to 10 puppies. Puppies attend all classes.
Fee: $125 per puppy Family and friends are welcome to attend with puppies
Prerequisites: Please bring puppies on flat collars or harnesses and a 4 to 6 foot leash Please do not bring them on choke, prong or other correction collars or on retractible leashes
Dog Details: Puppies 10-16 weeks old, at least one basic distemper combination vaccine. Puppies do not have to have completed the puppy vaccine series and do not need the Rabies vaccine to attend class.

Basic Obedience

Develop or refresh your handling skills and learn to control your dog while your dog learns the basic skills of self-control: Sit, Down, Stay, Stand, Wait, Leave It, Come, and Heel. This class addresses management and training for being a good companion.

The AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY program for dogs under 1 year is available in Basic Obedience classes held Tuesday evenings, Friday mornings & for Saturday Small Dog. Participation is not required to attend the class. For more information on S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, read the AKC brochure .

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour classes. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $125.00 per dog.  Family and friends are welcome at no extra charge 
Prerequisites: Please bring your dog on a flat collar, harness or head collar.  Do not bring dogs on a choke, prong or other correction collar. You will need a 4' to 6' training lead. No retractable leashes in class, please.

Small Dog Basic Obedience

For dogs under 25 lbs. This version of our basic obedience will help you with special handling and management considerations for small to toy-sized dogs.

Intermediate Obedience

Improve your dog's reliability by developing faster response rates and building reliability into the basic skills. Develop your dog's attention, attitude and accuracy. Going in the direction of off-leash work.

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour classes. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $100 6-week class
Prerequisites: Dogs must have completed a basic obedience course or have reasonably good responses to down, sit, stay and heel. Dogs must be able to work next to other dogs.

Introduction to Nosework

Harness your dog's natural instincts and desire to hunt and use his nose with techniques similar to those used to train detection dogs. 

You and your dog will have fun, build confidence and use mental and physical energy during class and during homework sessions. The intro class focuses on interior and container searches.  Workshops for special types of searches will be offered to students who complete the Introduction to Nosework class.

Instructor Nancy Frensley is in the instructor program of the National Association of K-9 Scentwork (NACSW) and offers a class curriculum that is suitable to prepare your dog for nosework competitions as well as just for fun. 

Class Details: Six week class for dogs 4 months and older. Each class is approximately an hour and fifteen minutes long, depending on the size of the class.Dogs will work individually in the class format.  While it's helpful to have a dog that is highly food or toy motivated, it's not necessary.  Sometimes dogs just have to "find" their abilities to enjoy them.
Fee: $100.00 for a six week class
Prerequisites: Vaccinations: Your dog must be current on DHLPP and Rabies.  If you have taken a class with us within the last year, you do not need to submit a vaccination form. Prerequisites: Dogs in this class must be able to stay in a crate out of sight of their owners for short periods of time.

Walking

Explore a variety of techniques to resolve pulling and lunging problems. Four weeks of focus on relaxed walking with your dog.

Class Details: Series of 4-45 minute classes. Meets weekly . Dogs attend all classes The final class will meet on a Sunday.  It will be a field trip to a park to work in real-life situations.  (We will probably meet at Cesar Chavez Park in the morning).  
Fee: $90 for a 4-week class
Prerequisites: Dogs should have some basic obedience training and respond to Sit, Down & Stay. 
Dog Details: Over 4 months of age.

Rally/Rally-O Obedience

For the connoisseur of dog training, rally obedience challenges you and your dog on flowing obedience courses that build great attention, good timing, and versatility. Includes exercises from both AKC Rally and APDT Rally-O. * This is a good class for both competition level and fun level training. All the basic, plus much more.

The American Kennel club now welcomes mixed breed dogs in all performance competitions.

Class Details: Series of 6 one-hour sessions.   Class meets weekly.
Fee: $90.00 for first time students.  Continuing students after the first time, $75.00. 
Prerequisites: Basic Obedience to a reliable level.

Canine Good Citizen Class & Certification

This class will prepare you and your dog for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test. This title and certification are bestowed by the American Kennel Club and show that your dog can handle real life activities, people and other dogs in a calm and safe way. This class gives you an opportunity to practice all ten exercises required for the CGC. All who pass the test receive a certificate from American Kennel Club and are entitled to wear CGC insignia. This is a must for potential service and therapy dogs.

The test is open to all dogs (mixed or purebred). The class is not a pre-requisite for taking the test. Day of test entries taken.

Dog Tricks and Useful Skills

A new twist on the basic dog tricks class. Make your dog a helpmate by teaching the useful skills of picking up things for you, opening and closing doors, and operating levers. Lots of work on a utility retrieve and fun tricks like balancing a ball on the nose, saying "prayers," rolling over, crawling and jumping through a hoop.

Class Details: Series of 4 one-hour classes that meets every other week. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $75 per dog
Prerequisites: Dogs should have enough basic obedience skills to be able to focus during class.

Outwitting Your Dog

Explore a variety of techniques to resolve jumping up, running away,lunging, plunging, piracy and plundering as well as other unruly behavior. Four weeks to doggie Zen. This is focused training for exuberant, but not aggressive,pooches. This class will challenge you and your dog and you will get results.

Class Details: Series of 4 one-hour classes that meet every other week. Dogs attend all classes.
Fee: $90.00 per dog
Prerequisites: None.

Class Details: The test is done on a drop in basis.  Preregister here and then pay at the door.  You will need to bring your dog on a regular flat collar (no choke, prong or other correction collars, please) and bring a brush for the Appearance and Grooming test.  
Fee: $15 We will send a Paypal invoice in advance of the test.  It should be paid before the test date.
Prerequisites: Dog should be adequately trained in the test exercises.

K-9 Nosework Exterior Search Workshop

This is a workshop for continuing nosework students That will cover how searches are done in exterior locations. 

It is taught by Nancy Frensley CPDT, CAP2 who is in the instructor program of the National Association of Canine Scent work tm.  She has taught various styles of scent work for over 20 years and successfully handled dogs in scentwork trials.  Her own dogs hold titles through NACSW.

Class Details: Each dog in the workshop will have an opportunity to work hides in outdoor locations.  We will cover wind patterns, starting and alerting on odor or  food.  Each dog will work at his/her own level. The standard meeting place is the 9th St Humane Society Parking Lot, but we may meet a other locations that will be announced to enrollees.  Dogs will be housed in the cars in which they arrive out of site of the working area.  They will not go into the building. 
Fee: $25.00 per dog. Please pre register. Payment will be by PayPal invoice.
Prerequisites: Must have completed an Introduction to Nosework or higher class to be eligible for this workshop.

K-9 Nosework Introduction to Odor

This is the second stage of Nosework.  In this stage, we introduce a target odor.  Using the guidelines of the National Association of Canine Scentwork, we introduce the essential oil of Birch, also recognized as Wintergreen.   The dog will learn to identify this scent and locate the highest concentration of it.

Class Details: Once odor has been introduced, the dog is no longer searching for food.  We will also work on procedures for passing the Odor Recognition Test (ORT) and trialing procedures.  If you want to do this for fun, once you learn how to introduce odor, you can teach your dog find a number of different scents Class meets weekly for six weeks.  
Fee: $100.00 per dog  for six weeks
Prerequisites: Dogs must have completed and Introduction to Nosework class with a qualified instructor.  Trainer approval required if you have not completed our Introduction to Nosework class.
Dog Details: Dogs must be 4 months of age or older and have up to date vaccinations.

Freestyle Workshop

This class is for the purpose of working on movement training, existing routines, shapes and patterns for teams who are interested in developing freestyle routines with their dogs or have a routine in progress. 

These are scheduled periodically.

Class Details: The class will include group exercises, individual performance/training work and moving to music in patterns. 
Fee: $15 per dog per session.  Pre-registration, but not prepayment is required. Sessions will be cancelled with fewer than three enrolled by the day before the session.
Prerequisites: Dog/person teams should have completed a basic freestyle class (anywhere).  Dog/handler teams should be able to heel to music.     
Dog Details: Dogs must be over 4 months of age and have basic vaccines.  No vaccine proof will be required for these sessions.

Introduction to Freestyle to Music

This two-hour workshop will introduce you to the basics of Canine Freestyle movement to music in the style of the Canine Freestyle Foundation (http://www.canine-freestyle.org/index.asp)

 

Class Details: You will enjoy learning how to select music for your dog and get your dog moving to it as well as learning the basic moves and reference positions used in constructing a dance with your dog that showcases your dog's beautiful movement and intelligence. You will bring a CD/MP3 or two that you like.
Fee: $25.00 per dog
Prerequisites: Dogs must be quiet and tolerant of other dogs moving around them.  Unruly or reactive dogs will not benefit from this workshlp.  Dogs may be crated when they are not working.  Crates can be provided. 
Dog Details: Dogs should respond reasonably well to sit, stay, come and loose leash walking and be over 4 months of age.

Crate Training Workshop-Free

Learn how to teach your puppy or adult dog to go willingly into a crate and remain quiet and peaceful while crated. Crate training greatly enhances house training efforts as well as being a good tool for use in many behavior adjustment programs. 

Class Details: We will use games to get dogs and puppies to rush into their crates and wait for permission to come out.  Crate games habituate your dog to crating and add to the list of manners your dog has.  A dog that is crate tolerant is a manageable and mobile dog. This class is a one-time, hour and half session.
Fee: Free.  Preregistration  is required.  We require 4 registrations to hold class. Crates will be provided or you can bring your own. 
Prerequisites: Puppies must be over 10 weeks and have at least two of the puppy vaccinations (proof required at door).  Adult dogs should also have up to date vaccinations.
