Youth Volunteers

NOTE: Because of the fire at our facility on May 20, 2010, we are not currently training new volunteers for direct animal care. To learn more about our other volunteer opportunities in the interim, and to be notified of new orientation dates when they become available, and please send your name and contact information to volunteer[at]berkeleyhumane[dot]org.

We welcome members of the next generation of animal lovers as volunteers at our shelter!

  • Volunteers between the ages of 10 and 15 years must accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
  • The parent or guardian who will accompany the volunteer during animal handling must be the same parent or guardian who attends orientation and training.
  • Volunteers who are 16 or 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during orientation and training, with two exceptions noted below, but may then work independently with the parent or guardian's consent. The exceptions to this rule are 1) seventeen-year-old college students living away from home, for whom we require the written consent of a parent or guardian but not his/her presence, and 2) emancipated minors, who may volunteer as adults.
